― Permaul picks up 9/83
Jaguars champion left arm spinner, Veerasammy Permaul picked up his 20th First Class five-wicket haul on Monday to lead the Guyana Jaguars to a commanding 10-wicket victory over Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in round five of the on going Digicel Regional Four Day Tournament at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. Immediately after victory was achieved at 14:57h the heavens opened which is perhaps the reason the Jaguars openers chased the 20-run target in 2.2 overs.
It was another cat and mouse situation with the rain again on the final day as was the case all match and after 16 minutes of play the players were off and the covers were on. Red Force resumed on 95/2 still 121 runs away from making the defending champions bat again. Kyle Hope was on 20 and night watchman Khary Pierre was yet to score. In the three and a half overs that were sent down, 16 runs were scored with both batsmen looking comfortable and scoring freely. Red Force were 112/2 after 44.3 overs.
The very next over when play resumed, Pierre edged to Leon Johnson at first slip in Gudakesh Motie’s first over of the day with the score on 112/3 to bring the most accomplished Red Force pair together. Jason Mohammed looked classical and untroubled in adding 35 with the patient Hope who was outfoxed by Keon Joseph. The pacey Berbician, bowled a short and quick ball to Hope who attempted to hook and was hit on the shoulder with the ball ending up in the wicketkeeper’s gloves and Umpire Christopher Taylor ruled not out however, Joseph was persistent.
Two balls later, Joseph bowled another short ball this time Hope hooked and found the safe hands of Shimron Hetmyer on the deep backward squareleg boundary. Hope gone for 40 from 185 balls with a six and three fours and the Red Force hope of salvaging a draw was gone at 147/4. Yannic Cariah who was out first ball in the first innings played patiently and with Mohammed took Red Force to lunch at 151/4 with Mohammed on 26 and Cariah yet to score. The visitors were trailing by 65 runs after 55 runs were scored in the session of 22 overs.
During the interval, a sharp shower came and the resumption was delayed for 20 minutes. With the sun peeking out, the Jaguars were on the attack. First to go was the prize wicket of Mohammed after hitting four fours and a six. Then after putting on 39 with Captain Yannick Ottley, the left-handed Cariah was hit adjacent to Permaul at 208 for 6 with the deficit at eight with four wickets in hand.
Roshon Primus got an inside edge at 215/6 to ensure the home team bat again. However, disaster struck next over when Ottley was caught behind off Permaul for 21 (2×4; 1×6) with Red Force just one run ahead and steering down the barrel.
The tail did not wag and Permaul helped himself to his best bowling figures of the season bettering the 5/60 he picked up in the opening round against Jamaica Scorpions to see Red Force folding for 235 a slim lead of 19.
Shimron Hetmyer (17 with two fours and a six) and Rajendra Chandrika who hit a boundary to seal the deal took 2 overs and four balls to get to the 20 runs required for the defending champions to take 20.6 points from a hard fought victory over a youthful Red Force team and the Christmas season rain. Jon-Russ Jagessar, Kyle Hope and Isaiah Rajah were the bowlers used in thee run chase. Jamaica Scorpions are the table leaders while Red Force remain at the bottom.
Veteran batsman, Shiv Chanderpaul who hit a majestic 143 in the Jaguars 1st innings was named man of the Match. The teams will now take a break for Christmas and the Regional Super 50 before the second half of the league begins in March next year.
