Jaguars fight back!

Colonial Medical Insurance Regional 4-Day Tournament…

ꟷ despite resistance from Powell, Hodge
ꟷ Smith bags 6 for 55

Action in the Colonial Medical Insurance Regional 4-Day tournament continued on day three with the Guyana Jaguars maintaining the upper hand over the Leeward Islands in the first innings, and Nial Smith wreaking havoc on that team with figures of 6 for 55.

Kieran Powell scored 99 for the Leeward Islands

Heading into the second innings at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua & Barbuda, Montcin Hogde and Kieran Powell ensured that the Jaguars toil for any success, but in the latter part of the innings, Versammy Permaul was able to peg the Leeward Islands on the proverbial back foot.
Resuming their start at 14:00hrs and with the score on 125-5, the last respectable pair of Leeward Islands’ batsmen, Jacques Taylor and Jahmar Hamilton, could extend their overnight 40-run partnership by only five runs before Taylor fell to Versammy Permaul.

Hamilton continued to rally on, and brought up his half- century before being bowled on 52. Wickets continued to fall as Nial Smith continued to live his dream debut in bagging 6 wickets for a mere 55 runs.
The Leeward Islands were bundled out for 154 runs, and thus trailed by a whopping 234 runs. They had lost a total of 5 wickets for a mere 29 runs, Nail Smith bagging 6-55, with support of 2 for 11 from Permaul, while Christopher Barnwell and Keon Joseph each chipped in with one wicket.
The Jaguars then enforced the follow-on in hope of dismissing the weak Leewards side inside of the second innings, but the rain had other plans, as it forced a break in momentum even as the Jaguars were on fire.

The short break saw a different Jaguars unit taking to the field, and Kieran Powell and Montcin Hodge made their lives miserable. Powell, the more aggressive of the two, smashed the ball to all parts of the ground as he scored his runs quickly, and the pair put together a partnership of 152 before Powell fell to Keon Joseph for 99, which included seven boundaries and three maximums.
From there Hodge and Devon Thomas looked to carry on, Hodge bringing up his half-century with ease in being the anchor of the innings. But Just as things were looking settled for the Leeward side, Thomas played an irresponsible shot in attempting to drive Permaul, and was bowled with the score on 181-2.

With some distance still to go, Kacy Carty made the mistake of swiping at a delivery off the bowling of Raymond Reifer, and handed the latter his first wicket even as he left the immovable Hodge at the crease.
But all good things must come to an end, and Hodge was finally dismissed for 62 made in 205 balls off the bowling of Permaul.
With Jahmar Hamilton and Jaison Peters being the fresh faces at the crease, and with the Leeward Islands trailing by 39 runs, the pair needed to last out the night; but, once again, a repeat of day 2 loomed over the Leeward side, as they lost Peters to Permaul and Jacques Taylor to Keon Joseph, to have their score plummet from 181-2 to 204-6.
In the end, the Leeward Islands head into the final day with the score on 214-6; with Jahmar Hamilton and Damion Jacobs remaining unbeaten on 15 and 3 runs respectively, and their team trailing by 20 runs.
Play on the final day will commence at 14:00 hrs.
