Jefford X Classic set to commence today

– sponsors make event more lucrative

Slated to be host under the theme ‘Celebration of Athletic Excellence in Guyana’, the mining town of Linden will come alive today with the staging of the highly anticipated Jefford X Classic at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground in Region 10.
This event has some of the top sponsors on board to reward the athletes and even the supporters. Each event carries a total purse of $80,000, with the winner carrying home $40,000, second place $25,000, and third place $15,000, each with memorabilia medals.

A total of $2 million will be handed out directly to the athletes by the time staging of this event is culminated.
In addition, the champion male and female athletes will benefit from $25,000 worth of Under Armour sports gear and $25,000 cash, along with trophies. The top three finishers in both the schoolboys’ and schoolgirls’ 150m races would each take home hampers and medals; and10 gate prizes will be up for grabs by patrons of the meet.
Andrews Supermarket will sponsor the Female Javelin event, while Jai Signs will sponsor the Male Javelin event.
In a previous interview with this publication, Edison Jefford, organiser of the Jefford X Classic, said the event is geared to be a celebration of athletics and athletes in Guyana, and athletes must accordingly be the biggest winners on the day; hence the prizes have been lucratively structured to be the most ever awarded at a single athletics meet in Guyana.
Thus the event will be one to remember, as the day’s action promises to keep all attention fully engaged as events unfold from start to finish.
This track-and-field event will see participation from several of Guyana’s most popular athletes. Every notable Guyanese athlete has competed at these Classics, with most holding meet records, including Brenessa Thompson and Winston George.
The event will get underway at 12:00h and admission is $1,000 for adults and $500 for children.
This meet is coordinated in accordance with International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) rules, and is sanctioned by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG).
The event has garnered the support of the National Sports Commission, ANSA McAL Trading, ExxonMobil, DeSinco Trading under its Swiss Brand, Antarctic Maintenance and Repairs, YK Investments Pawn Shop, Jude Bike Shop, Power Producers Distributors Inc, Magnum, Mohamed’s Enterprise, the NSC, Urban Life, Heineken, Lucozade, Andrews Supermarket and many others.
