Kishun, Couchman register wins at chess tournament
A group of young chess players got in on some much-needed competition action over the weekend, as the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Four sought to sponsor a Youth in Chess tournament which was organised through the efforts of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF).
The tournament, which was the brainchild of Councillor of Youth and Sport, Brian Nobrega, was keenly contested in three categories on Saturday, December 12 on the tornelo.com chess platform, commencing at 14:00h (2pm).
The Under-Twenty (U-20) division was won by Keron Sandiford, with Johnathan Stephny ending up second and Jessica Calender copping third. In the U-16 section, from a field of 17 players, Queen’s College’s 15-year-old Kishun Puran had five points followed by Saint Stanislaus College’s Italy TonChung with five points and Aniyah Couchman, also of Queen’s College, with five as well.
A scintillating tie-breaker determined the final standings, with Puran getting the win.
In the U-12 category, 30 children participated and as expected, Marian Academy’s Kyle Couchman once again emerged victorious with six wins and one draw against Nicholas Zhang for a total of 6.5 points. Queen’s College’s Maliha Rajkumar was second with six wins and one loss and School of Nations student Nicholas Zhang was third with five wins and one draw.
After what could be considered a 2020 season-ending tournament, the GCF extended appreciation to all the parents, players and sponsors for their support in 2020, as they looked forward to the new year.
