Labourer crushed to death by falling log

A 64-year old labourer of Hururu Mission, Aroaima in the Upper Berbice River, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), lost his life on Thursday evening after he was crushed to death by a fallen log.
Dead is Edland Benjamin, who was an employee attached to the NS Bacchus Sawmill/logging Company in the Upper Berbice River.
Reports are that the incident occurred at about 16:15h at the Bisooruni backdam, Upper Berbice River, as Benjamin was “tagging off” logs.
This newspaper was told that one of the logs rolled off a ramp, crushing both of his feet in the process.
At about 19:30h he was transported to the Kwakwani Hospital in the Upper Berbice area by workers attached to the company who were at the site at the time of the incident. Benjamin was examined by a doctor but died while receiving medical attention. A police report indicated that no other marks of violence were seen on any other part of his body. Nevertheless, Police have launched an investigation.
Meanwhile, a statement from the company said that Benjamin commenced working temporally as a logging clerk earlier this month. According to the statement, the company has already informed the family of its intention of paying all expenses relating to the funeral. However, the family has requested that a post-mortem be conducted.
