Linden deserves responsible leadership, not political theatre

Dear Editor,
The Opposition Leader’s shallow intervention over the opening of the new Wismar–Mackenzie Bridge invites a serious question: what constructive proposal is he offering Linden beyond demanding immediate access to infrastructure the government has already delivered for the people?
The frustration of commuters including myself is real. Parents want their children to reach to school on time, workers need reliable journeys, and businesses require the efficient movement of goods. These concerns deserve respect and its understood. They should also be addressed with the seriousness that public safety and infrastructure management require. Turning them into a platform for cheap political points or partisan outrage contributes little to their resolution.
The opposition leader’s suggestion that the bridge is being withheld merely to accommodate a grand commissioning ceremony requires evidence. A completed bridge structure and an entire crossing ready for unrestricted public use are not automatically the same thing. Responsible leadership should establish what remains outstanding, what engineers have approved, and when the full crossing can safely accommodate traffic before demanding that it open “tomorrow”.
Official project reporting has identified approach-road works, roundabouts and the long-term stability of approach embankments as important elements of this development. These are substantive considerations. A bridge must function as part of a safe, connected transport system.
Road markings, directional signs, lighting, pedestrian protection and safe junctions must receive proper attention before public use. Landscaping and beautification also deserve thoughtful execution because Linden is entitled to an attractive infrastructure and dignified public environment. However, the justification for any necessary wait must rest on clearly explained requirements for readiness; beautification alone should not become an indefinite obstacle to access.
That is the responsible position: complete the necessary works properly, communicate the remaining steps clearly, and open the crossing promptly once it is ready.
The Opposition Leader’s criticism also gives insufficient weight to what this investment by the government represents. Linden is receiving a modern four-lane, toll-free crossing. At the contract signing, the previous administration’s proposal was described as a two-lane bridge. The expanded capacity and free passage are substantial public benefits deserving recognition, regardless of political allegiance.
Four lanes offer greater capacity for movement between Wismar and Mackenzie. Toll-free access removes a recurring charge on travel. Together, these measures can support commerce, improve access to services and strengthen Linden’s role in the transport corridor connecting the coast, the hinterland and Brazil.
A credible opposition would acknowledge these benefits while asking precise questions about delivery. It would seek a clear opening timetable, propose practical measures to ease congestion during the remaining period, and explain how local businesses and residents can gain the greatest benefit from the new infrastructure.
Instead, the intervention described offers urgency without a demonstrated assessment of readiness. That is an inadequate and irresponsible standard for national leadership.
The bridge also belongs within a wider discussion about Linden’s development. Investment in the Bayroc sporting facility and the redevelopment of the Mackenzie Sports Club demonstrates attention to sporting infrastructure on both banks and its important to note no other community has two stadiums. Further, the two housing development in Wismar forms part of the community’s expanding opportunities. These investments, including improved community roads, agro processes facilities, the development bank which offers interest free loans without colateral up to three million dollars amount many other development happen warrant scrutiny of their delivery and outcomes, but they cannot reasonably be erased from the discussion for political convenience.
Linden needs proposals and serious conversations that connect these investments to employment, small-business growth, sporting opportunity and improved living conditions. How should local businesses/ enterprises prepare for increased traffic and business opportunities? Clarity on what maintenance arrangements will protect the bridge? How can better and improved transport links support our local tourism, manufacturing and services? These are questions worthy of a leader seeking the community’s confidence.
The government, for its part, should provide residents with a clearer and current account of the remaining arrangements. Public patience is strengthened by reliable information. Supporting the government’s investment and expecting clear communication are entirely consistent positions.
As a Lindener, I welcome this transformative project. I support taking the time genuinely necessary to ensure that the crossing, its approaches and its safety arrangements are ready. Our community deserves infrastructure delivered to a high standard, and it deserves timely access once that standard has been met.
The Opposition Leader should bring Linden a programme of practical ideas commensurate with the office he holds. Repeating “open it tomorrow” is easy. Demonstrating an understanding of safe delivery, economic opportunity and responsible governance requires considerably more.
Lindeners deserve that higher standard. Political theatre will not substitute for it.
Yours respectfully,
Jermaine Figueira
Former Member of Parliament
