Gunmen on Wednesday carried out brazen robberies on two West Bank Demerara business places within a 24-hour period. According to reports, the first robbery was committed at Murphy’s Shop in Murphy Street, Good Intent Village, where Massy delivery workers were held up at gun point and robbed by a lone gunman.
Guyana Times was told this attack occurred during afternoon hours when the proprietor’s daughter and niece were about to receive goods from the Massy delivery truck.

The proprietor of the shop related that she was not at home at the time of the robbery, but related that she is very upset over the entire ordeal. The woman also pointed out that the business is well secured and that the gunman was unable to steal from the shop. However, persons in the area are said to be afraid of going there.
According to reports, the gunman carted off with, not only the personal belongings of delivery truck workers but, the company’s (Massy’s) money as well. While in her distress, the owner of the Murphy Street shop appealed to would-be bandits to think twice before entering a life of crime.
“I would tell them don’t even think about it, think twice, they are jobs out there, at different levels you can get, people need people to clean and weed their yard [or] help them to do something, you might not be the Minister or the President but there are jobs,” she noted.
Meanwhile, the second robbery, which was initially reported by Guyana Times, occurred around 21:10h, when two gunmen stormed a Sisters Village roadside shop and bar.
This publication was told that the two bandits forced several persons to lie face down while they relived them of their belongings. The bandits reportedly approached the shop posing as customers, but quickly carried out the robbery.
One victim of the attack, who preferred to remain anonymous, told this newspaper that he was at the time purchasing phone cards, when the bandits came up, whipped out a hand gun, forced him to the ground, and made off with his mobile phone and money.
Guyana Times was also informed that as one of the gunmen held up persons in the shop, the other reportedly ransacked the home of the shop’s owner. This publication understands the Police are closely pursuing one of the prime suspects in the reported West Bank attacks, while other individuals were questioned.
It is not clear if both attacks were related, but police are continuing their investigations.
