A 54-year-old man is now dead after he was allegedly beaten and robbed while heading to his Lot 20 Latchmansingh Housing Scheme home at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara on Friday.

The dead man, Narine Singh, was reportedly making his way home on Independence Day when he was allegedly attacked and robbed. According to his relatives, he died at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Saturday around 06:00h. Relatives claim that before Singh died, he was able to reveal the names of the

persons who attacked him.

“We hear that he win some money at a pools shop and he was going home when some boys beat him up and take away the money. The people in the area said they hear he saying ‘ayo done tek me money, what you go do now, kill me?’ but them nah peep out,” the dead man’s sister, Urmilla Singh, said.

She related that she received a call around 21:00h on Friday informing her that her brother was lying in the bushes at the side of his street. Urmilla said she then made a call to her nephew, Arjune Sookdeo, who went to investigate. Upon arriving at the scene, Sookdeo found his uncle lying in a semi-conscious state and he rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted, to the Accident and Emergency Unit.

“He called some names, me can’t remember the names, but he tell my nephew to ask so so person and the person will tell him who did that to him,” Urmilla related.

However, according to Senior Superintendent and Commander of Police C Division (East Coast Demerara), Calvin Brutus, Narine is an alcoholic with a history of haemorrhaging. He added that the information the Police received revealed that the man may have died after he fell and hit his head on a concrete post.

“Narine was seen (on Friday) sitting in front of a shop bleeding and a resident assisted in cleaning him up. He then left that shop and went to another shop where he purchased a cigarette and when he left, he fell and hit himself on a concrete block and a relative came and took him to the hospital where he died on Saturday,” Commander Brutus stated.

He added that Police investigations so far revealed that the man may have died as a result of hitting his head and not because he was beaten. “We heard reports that he was beaten at a pools shop, but upon investigating we found that he left there unharmed,” the Police Commander said.

However, he went on to say that the Police could not pronounce on a cause of death until the post-mortem was conducted today.

The now-deceased man, who lived alone, was never married and had no children. He leaves to mourn his six siblings, and was described as a pleasant person. (Lakhram Bhagirat)
