This weekend, Junior chess players will have the opportunity to play their way into Guyana Junior CARIFTA Chess Championships teams, as the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) continues to identify and develop talents ahead of the April, 2020 competition.

Ronan Lee is touted for the top male spot in the U-14 competition

This weekend’s event will be the Mae’s Mash Under 14 Developmental Chess tournament that will work as both a scouting initiative for the CARIFTA Junior Championships and as a means of developing Mae’s Chess programme.
The seven round, Swiss formatted tournament on February 15 and 16, is being hosted with the intention to better the playing level of the Under 12 players, by having them compete against their Under 14 colleagues. Furthermore, when this weekend’s scintillating action is wrapped up, it will also conclude the selection of the Guyanese Under 12 CARIFTA team and signal the commencement of the Under 16 team selection.
Registration will be done at 10am on February 15 and will be free of cost to all hopeful participants. Only children born after December 31st, 2005, are eligible to play.
Following the two days of action, prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers. Meanwhile, special prizes will be awarded to the best female player, best Under 12 and best Under 10 players.
Based on those who have already expressed their interest in the tournament, the likes of Ronan Lee and Joshua Khan will be looking to finish on top. Meanwhile Anasie Federicks is a favourite for the girl’s competition, having recently competed in the Women’s qualifiers.
The tournament will be conducted at the Mae’s auditorium located at 9-19 Third Avenue Subryanville, Georgetown.
