Man on $20,000 bail over alleged threats to father, breaches of protection order

…as labourer on bail for larceny charge

A Georgetown man accused of threatening his father and breaching a protection order was granted bail on Monday when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, while a 21-year-old labourer was also placed on bail on a separate simple larceny charge. Fazil Mohammed appeared before Magistrate Fabyo Azore to answer three charges stemming from an incident allegedly committed on May 15 at West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown. It is alleged that Mohammed used threatening language toward Arak Mohammed, who is his father. He was further accused of breaching a protection order twice that had been issued against him. The court heard that the order restrained him from making threats and required him to remain at least 100 yards away from the virtual complainant. Mohammed pleaded not guilty to all three charges. During proceedings, he told the court that tensions between himself and his father had existed for years, despite them living in the same yard. He denied threatening his father and explained that he currently survives on disability assistance after suffering a serious workplace injury in 2021 while employed as a security officer.

Charged: Fizal Mohammed

He further stated that on the day in question, he had only gone outside to collect clothes from the line before returning indoors to lie down, when police later arrived and arrested him. After hearing his explanation, Magistrate Azore granted him $10,000 bail on the threatening language charge and an additional $10,000 bail on one of the breach of protection order charges. The second breach allegation was reprimanded by the court after consideration was given to his explanation regarding retrieving his clothing. Mohammed was placed on a total of $20,000 bail and is scheduled to return to court on June 1.
Larceny
In a separate matter before the same court, 21-year-old labourer Malachi Waddle of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was granted $50,000 bail after being charged with simple larceny.
Waddle, who was arrested on April 15. The charge alleges that on March 26 at North Road, Georgetown, he stole property belonging to Anthony Banfield, contrary to Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.
He pleaded not guilty. Following the arraignment, Magistrate Azore granted bail in the sum of $50,000 and adjourned the matter to June 1.
