Man robbed of brand -name sneakers, other valuables at Mon Repos

A resident of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway was on Wednesday evening relieved of a pair of brand name sneakers and other personal belongings by a knife-toting bandit at Mon Repos, on the East Coast of Demerara.
The 24-year-old labourer was reportedly heading to visit his child’s mother when he was held at knife point and relieved of the Nike Air-Max sneakers that he was wearing at the time, along with other valuables that were in his possession.
Based on reports received, the victim was walking along the Mon Repos School Road when he was pounced upon by the driver of a motor car allegedly bearing registration number PRR 1787. The driver whipped out a knife, placed it to the man’s neck, and demanded that he get into the back seat of the car, where two other male occupants relieved him of the footwear, silver jewellery, his mobile phone and other items.
The man was then thrown out of the vehicle, which fled the scene. However, in their bid to escape, the bandits came into contact with another car, resulting in minor damage, but the driver failed to stop.
The owner of the other vehicle reportedly summoned a community policing group patrol, which responded promptly and managed to intercept the car and its driver in a nearby village. The driver’s two accomplices were nowhere to be seen.
The driver and his vehicle were escorted to the Beterverwagting Police Station, where the robbery victim was making a report of the robbery. The victim was able to positively identify the driver as the culprit.
A search of the vehicle unearthed a knife fitting the description of the one used to commit the robbery. The 21-year-old suspect, who resides at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo and Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, remains in police custody assisting with the investigations.
The Guyana Police Force has commended and recognised the swift and professional approach by the members of the community policing group in apprehending and handing over the suspect and vehicle to the Police.
