Manzoor Nadir declared Speaker of the National Assembly; Shuman elected Deputy

Former Parliamentarian for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Manzoor Nadir has been elected as the Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

He was, moments ago, sworn in by Clerk of the National Assembly Sherlock Isaacs. Nadir is replacing Dr Barton Scotland who was the speaker of the 11th Parliament.

Nadir’s name was proposed by Prime Minister Mark Pillips and seconded by Minister of Governance Parliamentary Affairs Gail Teixeira. His election was unchallenged.

The new Speaker has a political career spanning over 40 years and served five terms as a Member of Parliament – from 1992.

For the post of the Deputy Speaker, Liberty and Justice Party Leader, Lenox Shuman was nominated by Prime Minister Phillips and seconded by Minister Teixeira.

Alliance For Change’s Raphael Trotman was also nominated by fellow AFC Member Cathy Hughes.

Shuman was elected with 34 votes in his favour.

Shuman was also recently appointed ministerial adviser on civil aviation, being a licensed pilot with a wealth of aviation experience.

An old student of the North Georgetown Secondary School, Shuman furthered his studies in Canada where he gained his piloting qualifications and experience.

He also served as Toshao of Pakuri (St Cuthbert’s Mission) from 2015 to 2018 and Vice Chairman of the National Toshao Council.
