Mayor’s Cup football postponed until 2021

As is customary with every individual who ascends to the role of Mayor of Georgetown, their birth anniversary marks the hosting of annual Mayor’s Cup activities.
For sport, that event is the Mayor’s Cup Inter-Ward/Inter-Village football tournament. The current Georgetown Mayor, Ubraj Narine, celebrated his birthday on September 12, just a few weeks ago. But as the coronavirus pandemic would have it, the Mayor’s Cup football tournament has been postponed, until the virus in Guyana is under control and the go-ahead is given.

“The Mayor’s Cup organising committee has planned a series of activities in honour of this occasion. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the rescheduling of these events,” Organiser Lennox Arthur said in a statement on Friday.
He went on to share his optimism about the hosting of the highly-anticipated street tournament early in the coming year, stating, “However depending on the lifting of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and the approval of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), the football tournament will be held in January 2021.”
