RHTY&SC cricket teams launch Lorenzao Johnny Memorial School Bags Project

“Education is the foundation for a successful future as it would open doors that normally remain closed and would make sure life’s worthwhile.
“The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) strongly believes that every one of our members should have an educational background and we would assist you in this effort. Sports and education can go hand in hand once you are committed, focused and self-driven. Education assists you to think on your feet and our own Jonathan Rampersaud has set an example that you can still play the game and emerge with 11 subjects, including nine Grade Ones”. Those were the inspiring words of RHTY&SC Secretary/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hilbert Foster as he launched the Lorenzao Johnny Memorial School Bags Project at the Area H Ground last week.

The late Lorenzao Johnny

Dozens of RHTY&SC members received a school bag under the project while the Club’s 10 cricket teams would distribute bags to less-fortunate students with educational materials as part of the Club’s countywide Say No/Say Yes campaign. Under this campaign, the cricket teams encourage youths to say yes to education, sports, culture, life, and religion and no to drugs, alcohol, crime, tobacco, and suicide.
RHTY&SC Assistant Secretary/CEO Simon Naidu noted that businessman Ryan Tilak donated a large quantity of school bags in memory of the late Lorenzao Johnny, also known as “Sham”. Johnny, a close friend of the Club, was brutally murdered in Rose Hall Town by bandits while exercising in the evening near the St Francis Community Developers Compound.
Naidu hailed Johnny as one of the main reasons the RHTY&SC was now considered Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation, and as such, the Club was delighted to honour his memory by hosting the school bag project. Naidu expressed gratitude to Tilak for his support and indicated that the programme would be an annual one. Tilak praised the outstanding work of the RHTY&SC, and stated that he was pleased to be associated with the programme in memory of his late friend.
