GGA to host fundraiser to aid fight against cancer

October is designated as Cancer Awareness Month and following up on the tradition of promoting awareness through sporting events, Guyana Golf Association will host an event later this month with a portion of the revenues raised donated towards the fight against cancer.
“We have seen a tremendous increase in the number of women who are interested in golf and we want to use the sport as a way to provide both awareness and a fundraising opportunity for the fight against cancer,” said GGA and Nexgen Golf Academy President Aleem Hussain.

More than 200 women have taken advantage of the opportunity to learn the game since the Academy and Driving Range was opened on Woolford Avenue in affiliation with the Scouts Association of Guyana and the Guyana Teachers Union.
The Academy, operating under strict Covid-19 and social distancing guidelines, plans to host its first-ever “Shoot for Cash or Credit” event that will run October 19-25 where there will be three categories of competitors: Women, Men 0-15, and Men 16-28 with prizes for the top two finishers in each category. The overall top scorer will win the grand prize of cash or phone credit.
The qualifying process will take place from Monday, October 19 through Saturday, October 24 from 15:00h to 19:00h daily. Contestants will shoot at a target to score points. The top eight players will advance to the grand finals on Sunday, October 25 at 16:00h, which will be live streamed.
All players will have 120 seconds to hit 10 balls at the target, with higher points for hitting the bullseye. Different distances for players of varying skill will make for an exciting event and a level playing field, with the winner walking away with $50,000 in cash or phone credit and bragging rights!
“This is the opportunity for players of all levels to participate in the fun and excitement of the sport and show off their respective skills,” said Academy Director Rudy Ramalingum.
Furthermore, the GGA and Nexgen Golf Academy are racing to ensure that they are ready for the demand that they expect to come as the country gets back to regular economic activity and airports reopen.
Hussain said: “We now plan to introduce membership packages that will range from as low as G$275/hour in an effort to ensure that everyone has access to learn and play this wonderful game.”
The Academy has a lighted driving range that is open daily from 6 am to 9 pm and provides unlimited balls, equipment and complimentary first lesson for just $1500/hour for adults and $500/hour for children.
A state-of-the-art putting green with sand bunkers and activities centre is under construction and will soon be added to the immaculate driving range currently being offered.
In keeping with its commitment to its Corporate Social Responsibility agenda, earlier this month, the Association, along with Survival Shopping Complex and CIMGRO Maraiko Bay Golf Resort, contributed hampers to the Guyana Teachers Union as part of the celebration of World Teachers Day.
