the 22nd edition of the annual Mayor’s Cup is scheduled to commence on Saturday May 14 at the Victoria Ground East Coast Demerara. The start of the much anticipated tournament was delayed numerous times because of the inclement weather experienced in and around Georgetown. Executive Coordinator of the event Lennox Arthur is hoping to have the tournament up and running this weekend after several delays.
The opening match will see a clash between East Coast Demerara side Buxton Bakewell as they take on Grove Hi Tech starting at 18:30 Hrs while Golden Grove, another East Coast team will face off against Agricola in the feature match of the evening at 20:30 Hrs.
The tournament which has 24 teams will be played on a knock-out basis and features teams from the five football associations in Guyana; the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA), Georgetown Football Association (GFA), East Demerara Football Association (EDFA), East Bank Football Association (EBFA) and the
Georgetown Football Club (GFC).
Top four finishers will be awarded cash incentives of $700,000 for the winner and $300,000 for the losing finalist. The third placed team will pocket $200,000 and $100,000 will go the team finishing in the fourth position.
Each game will be played for ninety (90) minutes consisting of two forty five minute halves. If there is no winner after the end of regulation, an extra time period of twenty minutes (20) will be played consisting of two ten (10) minute halves.
Should there still be no winners at the end of extra time, the game will then be decided by penalty kicks with each team being allowed five (5) kicks. If the game is still in a deadlock sudden death penalty kicks will become applicable.
