Mechanic charged with causing death of Essequibo construction worker 

Forty-five-year-old Mitra Mohabir, a mechanic of Backstreet Affiance Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), was on Wednesday granted $800,000 bail for causing the death of a construction worker back in June.
Police stated that on June 27, 2026, Mohabir drove a motor car bearing registration number PAM 8929 in a dangerous manner, thereby causing the death of Satesh Persaud, who was at the time riding a motorcycle, CM 2631.

The accident occurred along the Reliance Public Road, Essequibo Coast. Mohabir appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was initially not required to plead to the indictment.
However, after the Administration of Justice (AJA) was applied, the accused, represented by attorney Rajkumar, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted $800,000 bail.
As conditions for bail, he is to report to the Anna Regina Police Station every Friday of each month and also lodge his passport until the determination of the matter. He will return to court on October 13, 2026.
It was reported that on the day in question, Persaud was exiting a street on his motorcycle, and as he attempted to get onto the Reliance Public Road, he came into contact with Mohabir, who was driving at a fast rate of speed and seemingly under the influence of alcohol.
As a result of the impact, Persaud was flung several feet into the air and eventually landed on the roadway with severe head and bodily injuries. Persaud was transported to the Lima Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Mohabir was arrested, and after more than two months, charges were instituted against him.
