Miner remanded on B&E charge

A 22-year-old miner whose burglary attempts were unsuccessful, was on Tuesday brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the crime.
Michael Smith stood before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and denied that between October 9 and 15, 2018, at Lot 3275 Aubrey Barker Road, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, while being in the company of others, he broke and entered the dwelling house of John Primo and stole a quantity of items including a refrigerator, television, several cases of beer bottles, a security camera, one gas bottle and a DVD; all at a total cost of $426,000.
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne objected to bail being granted, citing the seriousness and prevalence of the charge.
The prosecution’s case is contending that the victim secured his belongings and went to a nearby bar. Upon his return home, he spotted the defendant and others making their escape with his valuables. The victim however followed the defendant to his place of residence, after which he went and reported the matter to the Police. Smith was arrested and charged but his accomplices are yet to be found.
The Chief Magistrate remanded Smith to prison. The case will continue today.
