The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) on Thursday announced the passing of its former executive secretary and founder member, Edward Anthony Shields. Shields passed away on Wednesday in the United States of America (USA) after a brief period of illness. He was 72 years old.
A former veteran of the USA war with Vietnam, Shields joined the mining
association in 1984, and served it faithfully until his passing.
The GGDMA has said it mourns the loss of the mining stalwart, noting that “his guidance and tenacity will be missed”. He has been described as a friend of the miners and a champion for miner’s rights in Guyana.
The late Edward Anthony Shields will be cremated in the USA, and a memorial service and wake will be held in Guyana at a date to be announced later.
