As the South Dakota Circuit at Timehri readies for the Guyana Grand Prix next month, Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill paid a visit to the facility on Tuesday.
Major upgrades have been taking place at the venue over the past few months as part of a commitment made by President Dr Irfaan Ali to ensure that the venue is up to par ahead of the third leg of the GT Challenge de las Américas, scheduled for July 11 and 12.
As such, Minister Edghill, accompanied by Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) executives and staff of the Special Projects Unit, conducted a walk-through of the Timehri venue.

Chief amongst the projects at the South Dakota Circuit is the major paving work which has since been completed alongside upgraded spectating areas and the construction of a food court, as well as the provision of parking spaces.
“We are actually checking on preparedness as Guyana gets ready to host a major motor racing event. The President, Dr Irfaan Ali, himself, has taken a lead, working with GMR&SC to ensure this event is a success. The Ministry has engaged three teams to execute the works. Today, we’re practically three weeks ahead of the game to see what’s happening and to know what interventions we need to make, and we will probably do another pit stop to see how that is going,” Minister Edghill shared in a statement during the visit.

President of GMR&SC, Mohamad Roshandin, expressed his satisfaction with how works are progressing, stating, “The Ministry has already repaved the sections that needed to be done, and that is up to standard. I must thank the Ministry and the Government for putting the extra effort to get this done.”
Further, notwithstanding interruptions by the inclement weather, the works are well advanced with the necessary systems to ensure the project is completed in time for the motor racing event.
The GT Challenge de las Américas event is set to put Guyana on the motorsport map, regionally, with several luxury cars expected to feature in the weekend’s race.
