Ranks of the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Prison Service on Saturday found a quantity of ganja at the New Amsterdam Prison, and also at Weldaad, Region Five, West Coast Berbice, during separate raids.
During a search at the New Amsterdam Prison on Saturday, 160 grams of cannabis was unearthed in the prison compound. Additionally, while searching the facility, a bulky parcel wrapped in transparent plastic containing a quantity of leaves and stems suspected to be cannabis was found abandoned south of the western side of the prison.
Also on Saturday, Police arrested a 40-year-old woman of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, with 9525.4 grams of cannabis.
The ganja that was found in NA Prison
It was reported that ranks were conducting a road block exercise when they stopped a hire car and conducted a search. At the time, there were two passengers in the vehicle, which included the woman. According to Police, further searches on the vehicle unearthed a multi-coloured shopping bag that was in the trunk. Upon investigating, two wrapped parcels containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found. The woman was arrested and is in Police custody as investigation continues.
Just two days ago a 34-year-old man was arrested after being intercepted with a quantity of ganja at a road block in front of the Fort Wellington Police Station, WCB.
Police acting on information received intercepted minibus BYY 5866, which was carrying about 10 passengers. The minibus was taken into the station’s compound, and a search of the vehicle was conducted in the presence of its occupants and the driver.
It was then a red, white and blue travelling bag was found under the conductor’s seat, and upon inspection, two wrapped parcels containing cannabis were found.
It was later found out that the bag belonged to a passenger who had joined the minibus at Rosignol.
The suspect was told of the offence, but he denied ownership of the bag. He was nevertheless arrested and placed into Police custody. (G9)
