Multiple homes, businesses go up in flames at Apaiqua Landing

A fire of unknown origin on Friday evening destroyed several homes and businesses at Apaiqua Landing, Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), leaving several families displaced and millions in losses.
According to reports, some nine buildings were destroyed in the inferno, affecting both residential and commercial properties within the community. More than twenty persons have been displaced as a result of the fire.
Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond and Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat visited the devastation on Saturday, where they met with residents and business owners impacted by the disaster.

In a brief statement from the location, Minister Waldron said the Government team was dispatched on the instructions of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to assess the situation and coordinate immediate support for those affected.
“The incident resulted in the destruction of nine buildings and displaced more than twenty persons. Our thoughts remain with the families and business owners impacted during this difficult time,” the Minister noted.
She added that officials are currently on the ground assessing the extent of the damage and working to coordinate relief efforts where possible. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
