NA man jailed for stealing from Bartica Deputy Mayor

Thirty-two-year-old Calvin Douglas of New Amsterdam, Berbice, was on Friday sentenced to three years in prison for stealing some .5 million from an establishment belonging to the Deputy Mayor of Bartica, Kamal Persaud.

The sentence was handed down at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

One hundred per cent of the stolen items have not yet been recovered but Persaud is thankful justice was served.

The stolen items included jewellery, electronic appliances and gadgets, including cellphones.

Douglas was charged with breaking and entering Kamal’s Gift Centre at the WK Shopping Mall, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) in November 2016.
