Former national distance runner and Guyana’s 10,000 metres record holder Kelvin Johnson died suddenly on Wednesday, October 28, prompting tributes from the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

Johnson, who also competed in cycling and coached young athletes, was remembered for his dedication to sport and his contribution to youth development, particularly in Sophia.
The AAG highlighted his national 10,000m record of 31 minutes, 14.14 seconds, established in 2013, as a lasting measure of his talent and commitment. Johnson represented Guyana across the Caribbean and beyond during his distance-running career.
In its tribute, the association described him as an athlete whose achievements reflected endurance, perseverance and sporting excellence. It extended condolences to his family, friends and the wider athletics community.
Beyond his performances on the track and road, Johnson remained involved in sport through cycling and his work with the Trendsetters Sports Club.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport said his commitment to young people continued after his running career, noting the lasting contribution he made to those he coached, especially in the Sophia community.
Just two days before his death, Johnson took several young BMX riders to compete in a cycling event organised by the Kaieteur Attack Cycling Club.
The ministry also recognised his dedication as both a national runner and an active cyclist, and offered condolences to his family, relatives and friends.
The GCF expressed sympathy to Johnson’s loved ones, teammates and members of the Trendsetters Sports Club, remembering his determination, passion and commitment to athletics and cycling.
The federation said his contribution to the sporting community would continue to be remembered and expressed solidarity with those mourning his passing.
