National athlete critical, others injured following 2-vehicle collision along Mandela Avenue

Three persons including national volleyball player Kristoff Shepherd and national table tennis player Chelsea Edghill were injured following a 2-vehicle collision on Monday evening on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

The accident occurred at about 21:00h and involved motor car PPP 6198 driven by Shepherd, 22. At the time of the accident, 24-year-old Edghill and 23-year-old Nickasie Lewis were in the motor car. The truck, GWW 3741, was driven by a 31-year-old man.
The driver of the truck alleged that he was proceeding north along the western carriageway of Nelson Mandela Avenue while the car was proceeding east along the northern drive lane of Homestretch Avenue.
On the approach of the intersection, the motor car was negotiating a right turn onto the eastern carriageway of Nelson Mandela Avenue to proceed south, and in the process, ended up in the path of the lorry.

As a result, the front right-side portion of the motor lorry collided with the right-side portion of the motor car. The occupants of the car reportedly sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital where Edghill and Lewis were treated for abrasions on their bodies and later sent away, while Shepperd was admitted a patient.

A breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the truck proved that he had no trace of alcohol in his system. He remains in custody as Police continue their investigations.
A relative who asked to remain anonymous told Guyana Times that the volleyball player is said to be in a critical state and he remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital battling for his life.
