In celebration of the nation’s 60th independence anniversary, the Guyana Volleyball Federation has announced a highly anticipated Independence Tournament set for Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the National Gymnasium.
Held under the theme “Peace & Unity through Sport”, the one-day tournament forms part of the broader Diamond Jubilee festivities in Guyana. The event is being staged in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) and the Government of Guyana, underscoring the Administration’s continued investment in sports as a vehicle for national unity and youth development.
The tournament will feature the top first-division volleyball teams in both the male and female categories. Four male and four female teams are scheduled to compete in preliminary round-robin matches, each played to 30 points.
Female preliminary matches will begin at 9:00h, running through 11:30h, followed by the male preliminary fixtures starting at 12:00h and concluding at 14:30h.
The championship finals promise intense action, with the female final scheduled from 15:00h to 16:00h and the male final from 16:30h to 17:30h. The event will culminate in a closing ceremony at 18:00h.

Final matches will be played in a best-of-three format, raising the stakes as teams battle for top honours during this milestone national celebration.
In addition to trophies, teams will compete for substantial cash rewards, with first through third place receiving $100,000, $50,000 and $30,000, respectively.
Organisers believe the prize structure will heighten competitiveness and showcase the growing standard of volleyball in the country.
The Independence Tournament is positioned not only as a sporting contest but also as a celebration of national pride. With the 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee symbol prominently featured in promotional material, the event aims to bring communities together in the spirit of teamwork, resilience, and patriotism.
