National U-17’s depart in search of Regional Title
Yesterday the national under-17 team winged out to Trinidad and Tobago to compete in the Regional Under-17 Tournament. The team will be lead by successful former under-15 captain and all-rounder Bhaskar Yadram, who won the Regional u-15 title in Jamaica 2014.
The tournament opens on Monday July 11 with Guyana set to face the Leeward Islands at the Inshan Ali Park. The team is on a quest to add to Guyana’s recent youth successes with a shot at an inaugural title at this level.
Former West Indies Under-16 player and wicket keeper batsman Joshua Persuad will be Yadram’s deputy. These two talented players will lead a field of players who were outstanding at the Under-15 level which won successive Regional titles in 2014 and 2015.
Apart from the captain and vice captain Kevin Sinclair, Kurt Lovell, Kevlon Anderson, Alphius Bookie, Steve Deonarine, Sachin Singh and Ashmead Nedd. All-rounders Javed Karim and Sagar Hathiramani are seasoned players and are also expected to perform with the bat.
Meanwhile, the bowling department will be led by medium pacers Collin Barlow, the hostile Joshua Jones and Kurt Lovell along with experienced left arm spinner Nedd. Off spinners Kevin Sinclair, Kelvin Umroa, Hathiramani, Yadram and Karim will complete a spin-heavy bowling department.
The squad recently concluded training camp at the Guyana Cricket Board’s La Bonne Intention facility, but was hampered from having outdoor sessions due to the inclement weather.
Following their first round fixture against Leeward Islands on Monday, Guyana will take on Barbados the following day also at the Inshan Ali Park. Round Three will see the Guyanese taking on Jamaica on Thursday July 14 at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Balmain, Couva while Round Four will be played on Saturday July 16 as Guyana take on host Trinidad and Tobago at NCC. Guyana will wrap up the round robin tournament with their final game against the Windward Islands on Sunday July 17 at NCC.
