NCC $545.7M rehabilitation has begun

Rehabilitation of the National Cultural Centre (NCC) have begun with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport inviting bids for works, estimated at $545.7 million, to restore the building’s exterior, and to address structural cracks.
The project forms part of the Government’s wider plans to restore and modernise the country’s premier performing arts venue. According to the Department of Public Information (DPI), the works will ensure that the facility can continue to accommodate cultural performances, theatrical productions and other national events.
According to the Ministry’s invitation for bids, the engineer’s estimated cost for the project is $545.7 million.
The procurement process follows preparatory work undertaken earlier this year, when Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson, and Minister within the Ministry Steven Jacobs, alongside project consultants and technical personnel, conducted a walkthrough of the facility to assess its condition and advance plans for rehabilitation.
In June, Minister Jacobs confirmed to the DPI that technical consultants were finalising the designs for the restoration and modernisation project. The plans are intended to address the building’s exterior and internal infrastructure, with proposed improvements extending to performers’ dressing rooms and public washroom facilities.
“We recognise and understand that His Excellency has made it very clear that the National Cultural Centre is important to us, and we want to ensure that it is fully restored,” Minister Jacobs stated.
The modernisation is intended to provide a more functional venue for local artists, cultural practitioners and organisations, while preserving the facility’s role as a central location for Guyana’s cultural and artistic expressions. Once completed, the planned improvements are expected to strengthen the country’s cultural infrastructure and enhance the experience of performers and patrons who use the facility.
Located on Homestretch Avenue in Georgetown, the NCC officially opened on May 16, 1976, and has served as a major venue for cultural performances and theatrical entertainment for five decades.
The planned rehabilitation represents a further step in the Government’s efforts to restore the facility and maintain its capacity to serve artists, cultural organisations and the wider public.
Bids are scheduled to be opened on November 10, 2026, at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board. (DPI)
