The National Sports Commission (NSC) has handed over a number of sports gear to the Guyana Karate Federation at the NSC Boardroom on Friday.

Receiving the items from Director of Sports Christopher Jones were GKF president Amir Khouri and his two vice presidents, Keith Beaton and Roger Peroune. Among the standard Olympic items handed over by Director Jones were shin pads, groin protectors, chest protectors, and fist protectors, usually categorised as mits.
In the handing over ceremony, Director Jones stated that current president of the GKF, Amir Khouri, had written to the NSC about the donation of items that were needed, and the NSC was currently able to allocate funds from the national budget in request to their demand.
He also said he hoped the equipment would be able to further athletes’ training. He described the donation as not being just a one-off donation, but the start of a series of donations, as long as all requests are made to the NSC in a timely manner.
Upon receiving the items, an ecstatic GFK President Amir Khouri said, “I would like to thank the (National) Sports Commission and the Government for this huge donation that they’ve made towards the GKF, and we will use the equipment towards the bettering and developing of karate in Guyana”.
He also said, “This equipment will assist us when we go abroad to compete, as these equipment are all WKF (World Karate Federation) approved, because some athletes cannot afford the equipment ,since it is costly; but with the donations made, whether it be local or foreign matches, the GKF will be able to support these athletes”.
Khouri mentioned the senior national karate championships set to be staged on September 30, 2018, and said he was looking forward to some support from the NSC, as he has followed standard procedure in terms of writing them a letter.
In his closing remarks, Khouri described the NFC donation as overwhelming, and said he was at a loss for words.
Director Jones then reiterated that if organisations need support from the NSC, they must send in a letter; and once approved, the necessary funds would be disbursed. (Timothy Jaikarran)
