Two blockbuster clashes were set to ignite the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Monday night as the curtains came down on the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) Diamond Jubilee Independence Cup.
In the women’s final, the unbeaten GCC Elite were slated to take on Hikers, who would have been seeking revenge for a 10-0 loss in the preliminary rounds. Meanwhile, in the men’s competition, a youthful, unbeaten Old Fort Top Form were slated to challenge the experience of the Pepsi Hikers in the men’s final.
The exciting double-header on Monday night was set up following a thrilling final day of preliminary matches at the premier sport venue on Sunday evening.
In the first match on Sunday, one goal was all it took to separate eventual finalists Hikers from Saints in a keenly-contested match. Hikers’ Trinity Greaves scored the eventual game-winner in the 28th minute.

The other women’s fixture of the day saw GCC Elite extending their dominance in the competition with an 8-0 whipping of Old Fort Inferno.
Princessa Wilkie started the onslaught for GCC Elite with a strike in the 10th minute, going on to complete her brace in the 41st. Amariah Sahadeo (23rd, 52nd) and Gabriella Xavier (39th, 40th) also added two each to the GCC Elite tally. In the 57th minute, Abosaide Cadogan was finally rewarded for her pristine striking while Rebecca Ferreira added their eighth strike in the 59th minute.
Over in the men’s division, eventual finalists Old Fort Top Form stunned GCC with two early goals, going on to secure a 3-0 victory.
Nkosi Saul struck first for Old Fort in just the fifth minute while Simeon Moore converted a penalty corner in the 11th for the 2-0 lead. Moore returned in the 59th minute with another goal to cap off the strong performance for Old Fort Top Form.
The final clash of the night was a doozy, featuring Pepsi Hikers and Saints in a 3-3 draw.
Pepsi Hikers Captain Robert France put them ahead early with strikes in the fifth and eighth minutes. While Saints’ Jabari Lovell managed to pull one back in the eighth minute, Pepsi Hikers’ Deheron Wilkinson netted in the 15th to establish a firm 3-1 lead.
However, Saints dominated the second half, going on to tie things up. Shakeem Fausette converted a penalty corner in the 48th minute while Aaron Abraham netted in the 59th to level the scores.
The GHB’s Diamond Jubilee Cup was powered by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) in observance of Guyana’s 60th Diamond Independence Jubilee in May.
