Pan Am Qualifiers over Super50 likely this year – CWI’s Bascombe

Rumours swirling in the regional cricket fraternity regarding the forgoing of this year’s Regional Super50 Cup have been quelled by Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe.
Bascombe, speaking on the Mason and Guest Radio Show in Barbados on Tuesday night, quieted concerns about when the Regional One-Day tournament will be hosted, admitting that it can be deferred to 2027.
“We will definitely have a Super50. Whether we have it this calendar year or the next year, we’re still working through that,” Bascombe told radio listeners.
Giving a reason for this predicament, Bascombe attributed the impending delay to a cramped October-November window, when the tournament is usually hosted.
The director of cricket explained, “It depends. So, they’re a couple things that we are considering. We potentially need to play a qualifying tournament for the Pan Am Games. As I mentioned, we have the England A team series in November. So, that window is becoming a little bit crunched.”
“Depending on when we need to provide those teams for the Pan Am Games, we may need to have the qualifying tournament this year, in which case, Super50 might be deferred until then,” he went on to divulge.
The director of cricket went on to elaborate on why the Super50 competition could not be used as the Pan Am qualifier.
“The Pan Am Games require individual territories, sovereign nations, to participate. The Super50 tournament is not ideal because sovereign nations do not participate in the Super50,” Bascombe confirmed.
The 20th edition of the Pan Am Games is scheduled for July 23 to August 8 in Lima, Peru, next year. Cricket will make its debut at next year’s games with the T20 format being utilised in the men’s and women’s competitions.
