The MV Knidos M, the largest vessel to date to transit beneath the Bharat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge (BJDRB), successfully passed under the structure on Tuesday.

According to the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), the Panama-registered Handymax bulk carrier completed the transit without incident, demonstrating the bridge’s ability to safely accommodate larger vessels navigating the Demerara River.
The vessel stands 48 metres (m) high and has an air draft of 4m. It measures 186.45m in length overall (LOA), has a breadth of 30m, a gross tonnage of 25,327, and a deadweight capacity of 42,000 tonnes.
MARAD said the successful transit underscores the operational capacity of the BJDRB to facilitate the movement of larger commercial vessels while maintaining uninterrupted road connectivity between the East and West Banks of the Demerara River.
The department added that the milestone reflects the bridge’s role in strengthening Guyana’s maritime infrastructure and supporting the country’s expanding trade and economic activities.
On June 24, the Public Works Ministry said that the Demerara River remains an active navigation corridor, with 4323 vessels having passed safely beneath the bridge since it opened to traffic.
