Parika man dies after being run over by sand truck

A 43-year-old man of Parika Salem, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) man is now dead after he was struck down and ran over by a sand truck on Wednesday.

Police have identified the man as Sheik Bacchus, also known as Babbo.

According to reports, the incident occurred just about 13:30h on the Parika Access Road when motor lorry GYY 7021, which is owned and being driven by a resident of Parika, was offloading sand on the southern side of the road.

Bacchus was said to be walking on the northern side of the road and upon completion of offloading, the driver drove off and collided with the now dead man.

The front left side of the truck first hit Bacchus resulting in him falling to the parapet after which the left rear wheel of the truck ran him over.

The driver of the lorry was apparently unaware that he hit and ran over the man and proceeded to drive away. However, he was stopped and told of the accident after which he returned to the scene.

Bacchus was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver remains in Police custody as the investigations are still ongoing.
