Police urge e-bike riders to use lights, reflective gear at night

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is urging electric-cycle riders to take precautions when travelling at night, advising them to install front and rear lights and wear reflective gear and bright clothing to improve their visibility on the road.
In an advisory issued on Sunday, the Force said riders should ensure that their cycles are equipped with lights at both ends when being used during the hours of darkness.
“You should also wear reflective gear and bright clothing to be seen by other road users,” the advisory stated.

The warning comes amid concerns about accidents involving electric cycles, with figures reported in March showing that 60 accidents involving the vehicles were recorded between 2021 and 2026, resulting in 14 fatalities.
Traffic Chief Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh had previously called for a reorientation of how electric cycles are used on Guyana’s roadways, stressing the need for riders to comply with traffic laws and adopt safer practices.
Under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 2023, electric cycles are classified as motor vehicles and are subject to requirements governing registration, certification, insurance and driver licensing.
Singh has repeatedly raised concerns about riders operating electric cycles without the required documentation or helmets, as well as the use of the vehicles by minors.
The Traffic Chief has also emphasised the importance of public education, noting that while electric cycles provide a means of transportation, their use must not come at the expense of road safety.
The Police have been encouraging riders to understand the risks associated with electric cycles and comply with the laws governing their operation.
