Pooranmall edges Brathwaite to draughts title

The Guyana Draughts Association’s National Draughts Championship concluded last Sunday at the National Gymnasium with Khemraj Pooranmall defending his title as the king of the board.
Pooranmall edged Mark Brathwaite in a thrilling finish as the match was played on the ‘International 100 Square Boards,’ moving from eight points to 10 giving him the championship. In 2015, Pooranmall finished on nine points.

Steve Bacchus missed the opportunity to enter into a tie breaker with Pooranmall for the second time in two years but was stranded on nine points following a hard fought match by Michael Frances.
Linden’s Floyd Cumberbatch made light work of newcomer Edgar Downer to add two points to his seven to become joint-second with Bacchus.
President of the Guyana Draughts Association, Jairam moved on to eight points to earn himself the fourth place position after defeating Francis and attributed his win to experience.
At the end of the tournament it was evident that the competition showed a superb display of brain and talent throughout the day as the event moved along into the night, ending at 22.30h. Despite the exhausted and mentally worked out brains, the players battled in a keenly contested competition right down to the end.
The president and other executives of the association lamented on the lengthy duration of time these games are taking. Whilst some players are playing within the time frame a few are occupying longer time and this is because the games are playing without clocks. The Association is soliciting the help of Corporate Guyana to assist with the purchasing of these clocks. The cost for one clock is approximately US$50. Contact can be made with the Coordinator Paul D’Anjou on telephone number 645-1002 or Jiaram on 614-6671 or 619-5296.
The Association would like to extend thanks and gratitude to the sponsors for the tournament; Lalta Gainda of Rubis Bel Air Service Station, Berbice River Bridge Company Inc., Attorney at Law Elias Gentle, Khemraj Pooranmall, Ansa McAL and John Lewis Styles.
