Aporter was killed in the wee hours of Saturday after he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding and crashed into a utility pole at Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara.
Shawn Patrick called “Collie” of Lot 89 David Rose Street, Bagotville, West Bank Demerara, died on the spot after crashing into a utility pole in the vicinity of the Guyana Power and Light, Goed Fortuin, WBD. He would have celebrated his 22nd birthday on Monday.
According to information, the man who worked as a porter allegedly overtook a car while negotiating a turn and jammed lorry GJJ 5817 at the rear which was travelling in the opposite direction. Upon contact Patrick, who was under the influence, lost control of the motorcycle and slammed into a utility pole.
Guyana Times understands that the young man was not the holder of a driver’s license and did not own a motorcycle.
At the home of the dead man, his family was making preparations for a wake with the assistance of close friends.
His mother, Abiola Lynch told Guyana Times that at about 04:00h at home, she received a phone call informing that her son was involved in an accident and was badly injured. She rushed to the scene only to find her son’s mangled body lying on the parapet of the Goed Fortuin Public Road.
In tears, she related that she could not recognise him since his face was in blood and was damaged due to the impact of the collision. She said she last saw her son alive when he left home with some of his friends earlier that day.
“His friends came out on the road, and they were going to Middle Street to hang out, it has a hangout place there and he went with them… The boy that own the bike, he went to drop off a girl at home with a car and left his bike for one of his friends to ride home and my son was the one to ride it home,” she cried.
The mother explained that she was told that a man pleaded with her son not to ride the bike. “He said he didn’t want Shawn to ride the bike but Shawn de want to ride the bike… He also say that he didn’t want to give him the key because, Shawn was high after they been drinking beers and so.”
The woman further detailed that her son lost his job on Friday and to ease some stress, he decided to go with his friends.
Meanwhile, the driver of the lorry was taken into police custody and is assisting with investigations. Patrick’s body was taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home and is awaiting post mortem. He leaves to mourn his parents and five siblings. (Bhisham Mohamed)
