Prime Minister Phillips launches 9th T20 Softball Cup

Prime Minister (PM) Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips officially launched the ninth edition of the PM’s T20 Softball Cup on Thursday afternoon at the Gandhi Youth Organisation Ground on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.
The tournament, organised by the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc, will be contested from October 2 to 4, 2026. Twenty-four teams have registered across the Over-50, Over-40, All Stars and Female 12/12 categories, while registration remains open.
PM Phillips, who is the patron of the tournament, welcomed the continued growth of the competition and described softball cricket as a “people’s game” that allows players from different age groups to participate.
“Over the years, I’m pleased to see this tournament grow into a truly people’s tournament,” he said.
The PM was also pleased with the expansion of the female competition, which now has eight registered teams. He committed his support towards increasing the prize money for the women’s category to encourage greater participation.
The winners of each of the three male categories will receive GY$800,000 and a trophy, while the runners-up will collect GY$200,000 and a trophy.

In the female division, the champions will receive GY$200,000 and a trophy, with GY$80,000 and a trophy going to the runners-up. Individual prizes will also be presented for outstanding performances across the four categories.
Phillips said the Government’s continued investment in sporting infrastructure, led by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, has created more opportunities for tournaments such as the Prime Minister’s Cup to expand beyond their traditional venues.
He noted that the development and upgrading of facilities across the country could allow the tournament to reach more communities and accommodate additional teams in the future.
Phillips also recognised the contributions of the organisers and sponsors, noting that their continued support has helped the tournament grow and remain successful over the years.
