Rain forces abandonment of opening round of ESCL tourney

Torrential showers last Sunday forced the abandonment of the opening round of the 2022 Essequibo Softball Cricket League (ESCL) over-40 20 overs competition in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam). Weather permitting, the competition is set to continue with three matches at various venues across the Essequibo Coast this Sunday.
According to Chairman of the League, Wakeel Layne, teams shared the points from the rain-hit round, but he is now hopeful the action can prevail this weekend. Notably, a new champion is to be crowned when the final is played in late May as last year’s winners Invaders Masters will not be participating. Sunday’s fixture will see Ravens Sports Club tackling Devonshire Castle Sports Club while Sunrisers Masters will collide with Hibernia Strikers and Queenstown Tigers will do battle with Caribbean Cricket Club.
Venues for these games have not been named as yet. In this double-round tournament, the champion side will take home a trophy and $100, 000 while the runners-up are slated to collect a trophy and $50,000.
