Record entries anticipated for Caribbean School Boys boxing championships

Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) President Steve Ninvalle is confident a record number of entries will make their way to Guyana for the third edition of the highly successful Caribbean School Boys boxing championships slated for August 17-19.
Ninvalle foresees the number of teams will grow exponentially from four in 2017 to nine, with countries such as Jamaica, St Lucia, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Cayman Islands, and French Guiana also slated to make the trip to the Land of Many Waters.
The GBA further highlighted the championships have shifted from its usual April-May timeline to August which allows a greater number of competitors to travel, on account of the school break.

Regarding preparations, he revealed that the locals would be encamped prior to the event to ensure they were in position to perform at their best and defend the “homeland”.
In 2017, the locals stuck to the script and dominated the event by retaining the overall title with six gold medals and two silvers while Trinidad and Tobago claimed four gold medals and four silvers.

Success of novices
Over the weekend, the Association held its Andrew Lewis National Novices Championship, which was rated as a “success”.
“I think the Novices was highly successfully; we are happy that the Republican Gym (prison gym) could have joined us back into the fold, although they would have not had a lot to prepare.” The immediate agenda for the GBA will be the preparation of Keevin Allicock and Colin “Superman” Lewis for the May 28-June 8 South American Games in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The duo would have just returned from a commendable showing at the 21st Commonwealth Games held in Australia and also from the Central American and Caribbean Games qualifiers in Mexico, which sealed their passage to the games in Colombia in July.
