Region 2 Chairperson shocked at conditions of Suddie Hospital

After receiving numerous complains about the poor services offered at the Suddie Public Hospital, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) the acting Regional Chairperson, Nandranie Coonjah and Councillor Arnold Adams, who is also the Chairman of the Regional Health Committee on the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) visited the region’s leading health institution on Tuesday afternoon.

The two regional officials have since reported that the institution was indeed in very bad shape and services offered are of a very poor standard.
Speaking with Guyana Times following the visit, Coonjah said she is very disturbed with the services offered to high risk pregnant mothers, who are housed inside the Amerindian Hostel in Suddie because the Maternity Waiting Home contract, which was awarded in 2016 and completed in 2017 is yet to be furnished. The acting Chairperson said she was shocked to see the condition of the only chair that was given to the High risk mothers to use at the hostel.
Indigenous mothers coming from as far as Region One (Barima-Waini) are being housed in the hostel and the living condition is “very bad”, Coonjah said.
The acting Chairperson noted that as a women’s advocate, she is very much dissatisfied with the treatment given to the high risk mothers and is seeking the assistance of a few businesses to donate chairs for the mothers before Mother’s Day.
Councillor Arnold Adams said the Suddie Hospital needs to be completely rewired since the existing wiring was done about 60 years ago and that is causing many electrical problems at the institution. He added that many pieces of equipment have been damaged due to the faulty wiring, adding that over the past three years, staff have had to sun-dry the hospital’s laundry since the dryer was damaged and never fixed. Adams said on Tuesday there was a scheduled sitting of the Monthly Health Committee Meeting at the hospital but no one turned up for the meeting.
