Apart from the physical structures, the regional administration is also focusing on the safety of students when they return to the classroom for the new school year.
“We are in a state of readiness and preparedness to ensure that there is no difficulty when Monday (today) comes,” Armogan said.
He pointed out that electricians and plumbers have been visiting all school buildings to ensure that all the plumbing and electrical works are functional.
There are 70 nursery, 57 primary and 16 secondary schools in Region Six.
Just over 7000 students at the secondary level and in excess of 11,000 at the primary level, while at the nursery level there are just over 3000.
At Thursday’s RDC meeting, concerns were raised over the safety of schools in the wake of monkeypox being confirmed in Guyana and active COVID-19 cases being on the rise in the region.
“Preparation in terms of disease prevention in relation to the reopening of schools is that we continue to adhere to the measures as agreed to by the Ministry of Health in terms of avoiding the possibility of getting COVID. The number stands at 30 right now in the region. On Monday it was 30. That is still a lot. Then we have two cases of monkeypox. That is another big problem although it is not lethal. We will be making sure that our teachers are apprised of these conditions that can possibly lead to a serious epidemic in the region in terms of monkeypox. I am sure that the Ministry of Health will be working very closely with the Regional Educational Department to ensure that the measures that the Ministry has asked to be put in place, have been put in place for the reopening of schools on Monday,” the Chairman assured.
