The Area H Ground in Rose Hall Town was a buzz of activities on Monday last with the start of the Bakewell Cricket Academy and the 18th edition of the Republic Bank Grade Six Summer Camp. The two activities are both organised by the cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) and cater for youths in the Lower Corentyne area.
The Cricket Academy will run until July 24, and its main objective is to offer dozens of youths ample preparation to play cricket at the highest level. Over 80 youths between the ages of eight and 19 years turned up for the opening ceremony. The young cricketers will be engaged in numerous coaching sessions with a battery of coaches headed by level three coach Winston Smith. The entire first session on Monday was focused on the art of batting, including batting stance, hand grip and movement, among others.

Dozens of students also turned up for the opening session of the Republic Bank Grade Six Summer Camp. The objective of the camp is to assist the youths in preparing themselves for a successful transition from the primary level to secondary. The students will be taught four subjects, Mathematics, English, Science, and Social Studies, along with special sessions in basic Spanish.
Students of both the cricket academy and Grade six summer camp will also be involved in lectures on a wide range of topics of interest to them, including peer pressure, personal hygiene, importance of discipline, career choices, and importance of education. Each child attending the two programmes will receive an educational package worth seven thousand dollars, including a school bag, hardcover exercise books, pens, pencils, rulers, and sharpeners, among others.
A total of $3M worth of prizes/gifts is also expected to be distributed to outstanding students of both programmes under the Basil Butcher Trust Fund.
