The cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) on Saturday honoured 32-year-old Rohan Benn as the RHTYSC Father of the Year 2026 under their Walter Nero Father’s Day Memorial Programme.
The teams – Poonai’s Pharmacy Under 11 and Under 13, Farfan and Mendes Under 15, Bakewell Under 17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under 19 and Intermediate, Metro Females, and NAMILCO Under 23 and First Division – hosted the programme in honour of the late Walter Nero, a close friend of the club.
Benn was nominated by a senior executive of the club, and the cricket teams, after careful review of the nomination, agreed. Benn, who was born in Essequibo, moved to Berbice five years ago and is the single parent of three children – two boys and a girl. He takes care of his children with special emphasis been placed on their educational background.
The cricketers noted that the devoted father was the perfect example of a father and, therefore, decided to honour him. Benn received a trophy, medal of excellence, framed certificate of excellence, a food hamper, and three special gifts.
Club Secretary Hilbert Foster congratulated Benn on his selection and stated that the RHTY&SC was honoured to recognise his commitment as a parent. Foster noted that the club has been honouring outstanding parents since its formation in 1990. The cricket teams of the club, Foster declared, hosts hundreds of self-development programmes as part of their contribution to the general public. These programmes are held under a wide range of sub-headings including sports, awards, charity, educational, anti-drugs, anti-suicide, community development, youth development, religious and publications.

Tony Nero, eldest son of the late Walter Nero, congratulated Benn on his award and urged him to uphold his high standard of being a dedicated parent to the kids. He also praised the RHTY&SC and the cricket teams for the remarkable job they were doing in serving the Ancient County of Berbice.
National Under-16 player Jayden Ganpat stated that he and his colleagues were honoured to present the Father of the Year Award to Benn and urged his three children to always strive for excellence in their daily lives. Among the players of the RHTY&SC are Kevin Sinclair, Kelvon Anderson, Clinton Pestano, Junior Sinclair, Sylus Tyndall, Jonathan Rampersaud, Shenetta Grimmond, Shabika Gajnabi, Ramzan Koobir, Danellie Manns, Shemaine Campbelle, Matthew Pottaya, Trisha Hardat and Leon Reddi.
An emotional Benn expressed gratitude to the club and the cricket teams for the award and committed himself to upholding his standard as a parent.
Meanwhile, the cricket teams under the Walter Nero Memorial Programme distributed hundreds of food hampers to fathers on Saturday. The cricketers, accompanied by cricket manager Robby Kissoondial, visited the homes of the fathers to hand over the food hampers which consisted of 16 different food items including flour, butter, sugar, chowmein, sweet soap and other essential items. The programme was co-sponsored by the children of Walter Nero and as such, the club wished like to express thanks to Karen, Sandra, Theresa, Jackie and Nancy Nero.
