The 2018 Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation’s (GABF) ‘Road to Mecca V’, bounces off tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), after being officially launched on Thursday at Palm Court on Main Street.
The winners of this, the National Club Championships, will cash in on $600,000. Second place finishers take home $400,000 and third place finishers bag $300,000, while the tournament’s MVP will walk away with $200,000.
Among the other individual awards are highest scorer, most rebounds, and the most improved player, all carrying a cash incentive of $100,000.
Road to Mecca will now host a total of 12 teams that will be divided into two groups of six in the round-robin stage, then the top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinal stage.
Eagles will make their debut and will line up in Group B alongside Victory Valley Royals, Kobras, Jets, Nets, and the winner of Berbice Amateur Basketball Association’s (BABA) tournament final today between Hopetown Stealers and Canje Knights.
Meanwhile, Group A will consist of Bounty Colts, Half-Mile Bulls, Plaisance Guardians, Pacesetters, Retrieve Raiders and Dyna’s Ravens.
Kobras and Eagles will go head-to-head in the first of four matches that are scheduled to be contested on the opening day, from 16:00hrs. The second game will be between two-time defending champions Bounty Colts and Half-Mile Bulls at 18:00hrs, followed Victory Valley Royals versus Republic Bank Nets at 20:00hrs. Plaisance Guardians will sweat with Dyna’s Ravens in the feature game that tips off at 22:00hrs on Saturday.
