Robbery charge lands West Ruimveldt man in prison

A West Ruimveldt, Georgetown man was on Wednesday remanded to prison after he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged with robbery.
Fazel Shaffee appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty and denied the charge which stated that on September 14, 2019 at New Market Street, Georgetown, while being in the company of others, he robbed Anitta Mohan of a cellphone valued $80,000 and a bag valued $5000.
The court heard that the Virtual Complainant (VC) was walking along New Market Street, Georgetown when she was approached by the 24-year-old defendant and others.
According to the prosecution’s case, Shaffee demanded that the woman hand over her belongings. The prosecution is contending that in fear for her life, the VC complied with the defendant’s demands and handed over her belongings. The court heard that Shaffee and his accomplices then made good their escape. The incident was reported to the Police, who later arrested Shaffee.
Police Prosecutor Ceon Blackman, in an application for bail to be denied, contended that a stern message needed to be sent to persons committing robberies since it is a prevalent issue.
Shaffee was remanded, and the case would continue on November 2, 2019.
