Row over rum leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

An argument over alcohol at Grant Enterprise, Lower Pomeroon River, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), on Saturday evening left one man dead and another hospitalised. The dead man has been identified as 33-year-old Elon Benjamin also called “Buckman”, a labourer of Grant Enterprise, Pomeroon River.
The suspect, who was also injured, was hospitalised under guard at the Charity Hospital.
Based on reports received, the now dead man, the suspect and a few other friends were imbibing alcohol and at about 23:00h, an argument erupted between the suspect and Benjamin over alcohol.
During the argument, the now dead man equipped himself with a cutlass and dealt the suspect two blows which resulted in him receiving chop wounds. In retaliation, the injured man whipped out a knife from the waist of his pants and stabbed Benjamin twice to his right-side rib.
Due to the injuries, Benjamin collapsed to the ground while the suspect ran into the bushes and escaped. The matter was reported to the police in the wee hours of Sunday. As a result, the suspect was contacted by the police where he was told of the accusation to which he admitted.
Further, he was arrested and escorted to the Charity Police Station after which he was taken to the Charity Hospital where he was admitted. Benjamin on the other hand was picked up and taken to the said hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The labourer is expected to make his court appearance in the new week.
In August, a 15-year-old boy was charged for the murders of his three-year-old nephew Kissoon Williams and his brother-in-law, Ramdatt Singh.
It was reported that on August 14 at Bat Creek Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo, the teenager went berserk and stabbed Ramdatt to death. He then turned the knife on his two sisters and their three children.
They were all rushed to the Charity Hospital where Ramdatt was pronounced dead while the others were admitted. The three-year-old eventually succumbed to his injuries.
After committing the act, the teen fled the area but was later found and arrested in the presence of his father. At the time of his arrest, there were stab wounds to his chest and a cut around his neck. He was taken to the hospital where he received treatment and was later slapped with two murder charges.
