SAG teams up with ANSA McAL to offer free prostate cancer screening

Surgical Associates Guyana (SAG) teamed up with ANSA McAL to offer free prostate cancer screening during the month of March.
The screening includes a free consultation and evaluation by urologist Dr Rajendra Sukhraj and a free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test for at least 50 men. Men between the ages of 45 and 69 years who have never been screened for prostate cancer are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.
Appointments can be made by calling 613-6464.

Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Caribbean men. In fact, the Caribbean has some of the highest prostate cancer mortality rates in the world. Caribbean men of African ancestry are especially at risk, with 1 in 6 expected to develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.
Screening tests are designed to detect cancer at the early stages, at which point a cure is still possible. Prostate cancer screening has been shown to improve mortality rates and prevent metastatic cancers ie cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
Surgical Associates Guyana is a group of Guyanese surgeons who are highly skilled in their respective fields. They have a common mission of providing the Guyanese with first-world level surgical care.
Dr Sukhraj is a specialist urological surgeon who obtained his post-graduate training at the University of the West Indies and spent almost eight years in Trinidad at the San Fernando General Hospital where he received his urology subspecialty training.
Prostate cancer is cancer that occurs in the prostate. The prostate is a small walnut-shaped gland in males that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. Many prostate cancers grow slowly and are confined to the prostate gland, where they may not cause serious harm. However, while some types of prostate cancer grow slowly and may need minimal or even no treatment, other types are aggressive and can spread quickly.
