Shemaine Campbelle and Cherry-Ann Fraser are the two Guyanese in the West Indies Women’s squad that will play the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s World Cup in New Zealand from March 4 to April 3. Kaysia Schultz and Mandy Mangru are two other Guyanese, but they are the travelling reserves.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s Lead Selector Ann Browne-John has said that Mangru and Schultz, and the other travelling reserve Jannillea Glasgow, are the players CWI are grooming for the future.
“Those are three young players, they have not played at the international level, Mandy got her first stint at the international level in the last game against South Africa. They (Mangru and Schultz) played in the ‘A’ team series against Pakistan last year.
“They are part of the cadre of young people that we are looking at and trying to groom. I think you have heard us said before that that ‘A’ team against Pakistan was a very welcome one, because we were able to see our next group of players and the next set of players that we have,” Browne-John has said.
Sharing her sentiments on Mangru, the Lead Selector said: “When we have looked, we looked at Mandy and the batting we have present, and we definitely know that Mandy is a batter for the future. Mandy is someone that can bat from the top of the innings to the middle-order.
Speaking about Schultz, Browne-John said: “Kaysia brings some left-arm orthodox which we have been lacking in our team. We had one player who was in the team recently, Quiana Joseph, and due to injury, she was not able to make this tour, so Kaysia brings that left-arm orthodox.”
