Scotiabank supports documentary on suicide

Scotiabank has joined the fight against the suicide epidemic in Guyana by throwing its support behind a locally-produced documentary entitled “Kiskadee’s Shadow”.

The Bank recently donated $250,000 towards the project, which explores the causes of Guyana’s suicide rate, currently the highest in the world. By creating awareness of the contributing factors and prevention, as well as the impact on family, friends and the community, it is expected that the film will help change attitudes to suicide, which is falsely seen by many as the only solution to problems.
This is the Bank’s second contribution in two months towards projects aimed at reducing the rate of suicide in Guyana. Several weeks ago, Scotiabank presented the Guyana Foundation with US$36,000 to be used for the Zorg Sunrise Centre, Essequibo Coast. The money is the first tranche of a two-year commitment totalling US$72,000 and it will be used to sustain the work of the Sunrise Centre which includes counselling and skills-training for members of the public.
The film’s other major sponsors are Grand Coastal Hotel and the Rotary Club of Georgetown. A three-member film crew has been in Guyana recording footage over the past six months and they are currently editing the film for an expected release around the end of May 2017.
