Sections of Ruimveldt Industrial Site roads remain in deplorable state

Though one section of the eastern half of the deplorable roads at Ruimveldt Industrial Estate has been fixed, many are left questioning why only the area from the main road up to a housing scheme in the area has been rehabilitated.

Up to late Wednesday, Guyana Times was awaiting a response from the Public Relations Department of Banks DIH Limited to ascertain if that entity had undertaken the rehabilitation works.
This query was sought after operatives of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) were reluctant to confirm if indeed City Hall had rehabilitated a section of the roadway.
The area falls in Constituency 14, which runs from the back of South Ruimveldt and extends onto the Demerara River, encompassing Industrial Site. One of the Councillors of that Georgetown constituency, Sherrod Duncan, told this publication on Wednesday that he could not confirm if City Hall had fixed the road.

Guyana Times also contacted Town Clerk Royston King, who likewise could not confirm if the partly fixed road was a City Hall project. He, however, promised to make enquiries, but up to late Wednesday evening, this newspaper could not garner a follow-up from the City’s point official.
Nevertheless the Guyana Times learnt that the road was rehabilitated by the Public Infrastructure Ministry, which exhibited a clear bias against other businesses in the area.
Several roads in the Ruimveldt wards of Georgetown have been in deplorable condition for some time now, and after repeated reports in this newspaper, which has its base of operation in the area, some patch work has been done. The services obtainable in Ruimveldt Industrial Estate include distribution, bond storage, hardware materials for purchase, and motor vehicle body work and repairs.

Some of the businesses in the area include Distribution Services Limited (DSL), Thriving Auto-body and Repair Shop, E-Networks Inc, Twins Manufacturing, and storage bonds belonging to Kissoons, Banks DIH Limited, and Sunfoods.
In February last year, Guyana Times reported that much of the western half of the area was rehabilitated. At that time, then Deputy Mayor, Sherod Duncan, told this entity that he would look into the matter. Duncan was the elected representative of Georgetown’s Constituency 14 after the 2016 Local Government Elections. In a published letter to the press in late 2016, the former Deputy Mayor recognised that the area included a “huge piece of real estate,” but cautioned that there were “budget deficits” to provide services to the area.
